The bulky brick problem
Current laptop power converters are based on switch-mode technology, that use a silicon transistor with a breakdown voltage of 600V as a switch, providing power when needed by switching on and switching off when not needed. These switch-mode power supplies were invented in the 1980s and reduced the total amount of power consumed by devices. This decades old technology yields large size power supplies because of their large silicon transistors with low on-resistance can only switch at ~100 kHz without becoming inefficient (losing power to generate heat) due to the inherent low mobility of silicon. Further, the quanta of power created at ~100 kHz determines the size of storage elements such as inductors and capacitors in the circuit. With these considerations, today’s typical power converter systems operate at < 88% efficiency and run at frequencies < 100 kHz and provide ~10W/in3 in power density.
Reducing the size
By increasing switching frequency, thereby reducing the size of the storage elements, while maintaining or increasing efficiency we are able to produce smaller and lighter power converters. NexGen Power Systems’s resonant switching topologies allow for higher switching frequencies, while utilizing transistors with higher breakdown voltages (2.5x DC bus voltage which is greater than 600V) that have low parasitics, enabling them to be efficiently switched at these higher frequencies.
We are currently moving into our first WBG device-based charger with our proprietary resonant switching converter topology and will continue to advance chargers from bulky power supplies to new and innovative designs.
